tale of Coot
Of course, after Nhan married he became a rich man but he didn’t forget his friend. He himself went back his homeland to find his friend, Quốc. Quốc now was still alive, still teaching. Thought Quốc was in school year, Nhân negotiated with student’s parents to let Quốc go to his home.
Nhân brought his friend came home and asked his family to treat Quốc as him.
But, Nhân’s wife differed him she slighted poor people. She had never lived a poor life so she didn’t understand their sentiment but she didn’t dare to refuse her husband’ words. Nhân always said his wife: “This is my best friend. Maybe I would be died, if I didn’t have him.
His wife muttered: “Friend, your friend only knew staying home and eating”.
Day by day she was getting more uncomfortable. She often said harsh things, sometime nagged both her husband and his friend.
A day, when she was on top of discomfort she said to her husband front of his friend’s face:
“A man, not father, also not creditors, suddenly appeared and lived as a lord. Please get rid of him as fast as you can.”
Saw his wife’s attitude was more excessive each day, Nhân took care of his friend closer and in other hand, he tried to advise his wife. But his wife didn’t change her attitude. Quốc realized that thing. He had said Nhân let he go twice but Nhân always insisted him staying. Therefore, quốc tried to stay at Nhân home few days.
But it was over his endurance when he had heard her strong insult. That made him decided to leave. A day when was early he opened the door left without saying goodbye. He left his scraf on a bough, pretended as if he was dead then went to a other village continued teaching.
Nhân got up, didn’t see his friend and knew that he left because of self-respect. He went to find his friend. As he heard that a person picked up a scraf in the forest, he came to take a look and realized that was his friend’s scraf. He blamed himself that he himself harmed his friend. He followed the road that led to the forest, hoped that he could find his friend. First, he also thought that his friend was killed by robbers but then he thought that his friend didn’t have money so he could meet robbers and he thought that his friend could be lost or was killed by a tiger.
He went toward the forest, didn’t see bloodstains that made him belive that his friend was alive. He went deeper and deeper, called his friend name consecutively:
“Quốc, Quốc, Quốc….”
But the forest was too large. Although he spent long time to go he didn’t find his friend. Until he stopped breathing he still called his friend’s name:
“Quốc, Quốc…”
He died, transformed into a bird which continued calling the name, Quốc so people called it Quốc to remembered that the good man had looked for his bestfriend until he died
